The purpose of this session is to provide a review of established principles and update of new developments in neck sonography. It will emphasize the clinical knowledge necessary to provide valuable information in patients with neck disease. This session will focus on the use of ultrasound to determine initial management, guide fine needle aspiration, and follow-up of thyroid nodules. The session will discuss the growing role that ultrasound plays in the evaluation of extrathyroidal neck structures. It will highlight the role of sonography and the sonographic findings and accuracy in imaging the cervical lymph nodes, the parathyroid glands, and the salivary glands. This session will provide strategies for improving the recognition, description, and analysis of thyroid and extrathyroidal neck disease.
Developed in conjunction with Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound.
Learning Objective Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
Recognize, describe, and report sonographic findings of thyroid nodules and recommend appropriate further management.
Interpret ultrasound examinations of the cervical lymph nodes and distinguish nodes that are likely to be benign from those that are likely to be malignant.
Discuss the use of ultrasound in the evaluation of patients with hyperparathyroidism and salivary gland disease.
