The purpose of this session is to present new algorithms, ideas, and technologies that are relevant to the management and reporting of incidental findings detected at cross-sectional imaging. Incidental findings are a well-known burden to physicians and patients, and can substantially reduce the value of imaging if managed inappropriately. In 2010, the ACR Incidental Findings Committee published its first white paper – in the Journal of the American College of Radiology (JACR) – providing algorithm-based guidance on the management of such findings in the kidney, liver, pancreas, and adrenal gland. The radiology community responded with considerable enthusiasm, prompting further publications that addressed additional incidental findings. Since 2010, there have been new developments in our understanding of the natural history of certain incidental findings (e.g. intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas), and new informatics solutions have emerged to support consistent and appropriate reporting.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss updated information to manage incidental findings of the kidney, liver, pancreas, and adrenal gland.
  • Evaluate current methods used by the ACR Incidental Findings Committee to generate new management algorithms.
  • Identify new ideas and solutions concerning reporting norms for incidental findings.
