The purpose of the session is to inform participants of recent directions and products of the ACR Incidental Findings Committee (IFC). The newest recommendations of the IFC are those on chest and thyroid incidental findings. The chest recommendations include incidentally discovered pulmonary nodules, mediastinal, cardiac and other findings seen on chest imaging. The thyroid recommendations involve how to manage thyroid nodules incidentally discovered on imaging studies not dedicated primarily to thyroid examinations, including CT and MRI studies that include the neck, and PET/CT and carotid ultrasound. The consensus algorithms for applying the new recommendations will be shown and several of the key recommendations for each application will be described. These subjects address problems that are commonly seen and for which consistent recommendations had not been available or were outdated. This session will also provide practical solutions for managing these findings.
Relate background to select a variety of practical decision support methods for managing incidental findings.
Analyze whether to perform dedicated thyroid ultrasound for incidental thyroid nodules on CT, MRI, PET or ultrasound.
Assess when incidental pulmonary nodules, mediastinal adenopathy and other chest IFs require further evaluation.
