The purpose of the series of lectures is to provide the essential components of quality, including those for leadership. Radiologists are often unfamiliar with basic tools from other medical and non-medical disciplines that can be readily applied to improve quality in radiology. Note: The Quality and Safety Program is formatted in five parts to provide attendees interested in quality and safety a comprehensive program that can be used to train and nurture specific individuals to serve their institutions as the Radiology Quality Officer.

The purpose of this session is to focus on the evolving world of accountable care and value-based arrangements, highlighting trends that will guide strategy for radiology groups seeking to thrive in a rapidly changing environment. The imperative and theoretical framework for accountable care arrangements, including the Triple Aim, will be supplemented by specific discussion of how value-based payment models work, from the perspective of ACO leadership. The general framework will be presented with the needs of radiology in mind, with specific discussion of potential role of radiology groups in this new paradigm and an example of a successful co-management model. Developed in conjunction with Radiology Leadership Institute.

The purpose of this session is to explore the different approaches to evaluating the patient with chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. Chronic liver disease, most commonly due to alcoholism or the hepatitis B or C virus, is very prevalent in the United States. Grey-scale ultrasound of the patient with chronic liver disease is widely used, often with color doppler to survey for cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and portal hypertension. This session will also focus on the importance of the advanced techniques of US and MR elastography that can quantify liver fibrosis in the patient with chronic liver disease. Finally there will be a discussion on the role of IV contrast agents in evaluating the chronic liver disease patient with a suspicious lesion. Developed in conjunction with Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound.

The purpose of this session is to present new algorithms, ideas, and technologies that are relevant to the management and reporting of incidental findings detected at cross-sectional imaging. Incidental findings are a well-known burden to physicians and patients, and can substantially reduce the value of imaging if managed inappropriately. In 2010, the ACR Incidental Findings Committee published its first white paper – in the Journal of the American College of Radiology (JACR) – providing algorithm-based guidance on the management of such findings in the kidney, liver, pancreas, and adrenal gland. The radiology community responded with considerable enthusiasm, prompting further publications that addressed additional incidental findings. Since 2010, there have been new developments in our understanding of the natural history of certain incidental findings (e.g. intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas), and new informatics solutions have emerged to support consistent and appropriate reporting.
